If you’ve spent any time around Ensenada, Baja California like I have, you know that off-road racing is much more than a sporting event here. It’s part of the culture of the peninsula. And every year, when the Baja 400 comes to town, Ensenada becomes the center of attention for racers, teams, spectators, and visitors from Mexico, the United States, and beyond.
I’ve been to Baja many times and have experienced Baja racing a few times, but I want to tell you about the Baja 400 from a slightly different perspective. Not just the race itself. But, what happens to Ensenada when the Baja 400 comes to town.
What does the city feel like? How much does the race change the atmosphere? Where do people gather? What happens around the race course? And what is it actually like to visit Ensenada during one of the biggest off-road racing events in Baja?
I’m planning to be in Ensenada for the 2026 Baja 400, and I’ll be documenting the experience. [VIDEO WILL BE EMBEDDED HERE AFTER THE 2026 RACE]
What Is the Baja 400?
The Baja 400 is one of the major SCORE off-road races held on the Baja California peninsula. Unlike a conventional race held on a closed circuit, Baja races take place across the rugged landscape of the peninsula, using a combination of dirt roads, trails, washes, rocky sections, and other challenging terrain.
The Baja 400 is part of the SCORE World Desert Championship and takes place around Ensenada. The race attracts professional teams as well as a wide range of competitors in different vehicle classes. The spectacle isn’t limited to the actual race vehicles, either. Prerunners, support trucks, race teams, spectators, vendors, and all the activity surrounding the event are a big part of the experience.
When Is the 2026 Baja 400?
The 2026 Baja 400 is scheduled for September 12, 2026, in and around Ensenada. The surrounding days are also an important part of the experience because the city begins filling with racers, teams, support vehicles, and spectators before race day.
For someone visiting Ensenada specifically for the Baja 400, it’s worth thinking of the event as more than just the few hours when the vehicles are actually racing. The atmosphere surrounding the race is part of what makes Baja racing so interesting.
Ensenada and Baja Racing
Ensenada has a long relationship with off-road racing. If you’ve spent time traveling around Baja, you’ll quickly realize that racing is woven into the landscape. You can drive down a seemingly ordinary dirt road and realize that you’re traveling on a route that has been used by race vehicles.I have done so myself many times! That’s one of the things I love about traveling in Baja. The interesting stories aren’t always obvious. Sometimes you’re driving down a dirt road because you want to see where it goes. Sometimes you stop because something catches your eye. And sometimes you discover that the seemingly insignificant road you’re traveling on is actually part of something much bigger. Baja racing is a perfect example of that.
What Happens to Ensenada During the Baja 400?
Ensenada is already a busy coastal city, with its bustling port, thousands of tourists arriving on massive cruise ships, and countless visitors driving across the border from the U.S., but a major Baja race brings a completely different energy.. Race vehicles and support trucks become part of the scenery. Teams prepare their vehicles. Spectators begin looking for good places to watch. Hotels and restaurants have another influx of visitors, and roads around the race route can become much busier than normal.
If you’re someone who doesn’t follow off-road racing closely, it can be easy to think that the Baja 400 is simply a race that happens somewhere outside the city. But I’m curious about everything around it. What does it look like from the perspective of an ordinary visitor? How noticeable is the race in town? And how much does it change the character of Ensenada for the weekend? Do You Have to Be a Racing Fan to Enjoy the Baja 400? I don’t think so.
I’ve always been interested in Baja racing for the thrill of it, but I don’t know the different classes, teams, vehicle specifications, or racing history to appreciate what’s happening. Part of the attraction is simply seeing the scale of the event. These aren’t ordinary road vehicles. Watching them prepare for and tackle some of Baja’s roughest terrain is impressive even if you don’t know anything about off-road racing. And there’s something particularly Baja about the whole experience. The combination of desert, mountains, dirt roads, rugged vehicles, and people who are willing to drive hundreds of miles through difficult terrain is part of what makes the peninsula so fascinating.
Visiting Ensenada for the Baja 400
If you’re considering visiting Ensenada for the race, I’d recommend treating it as a trip to Ensenada that happens to include the Baja 400 rather than planning your entire visit around the race alone. Ensenada has plenty to offer outside of racing, including its waterfront, restaurants, wineries, breweries, beaches, and access to some of the surrounding countryside. The Baja 400 simply gives you another reason to visit—and an opportunity to see a very different side of the city.
Keep in mind that race-related traffic and road conditions can be different from a normal weekend, so it’s worth checking official race information and local updates before heading out.
Why I Keep Coming Back to Baja
One of the reasons I enjoy traveling around Baja California is that there always seems to be something else to discover. I’ve driven the peninsula looking for beaches, mountains, small towns, historic sites, remote campsites, and forgotten roads. And sometimes the best experiences happen because I see a road that looks interesting and decide to find out where it goes.

Agua Verde, Baja California Sur is a remote and one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever explored in Baja. In this video, I take you on a complete adventure to El Puertito, the remote beach and camping area across the small bay from the fishing community of Agua Verde.
The journey involves a long dirt-road drive through the Sierra de la Giganta before descending toward the Sea of Cortez. Along the way, we see the spectacular coastline, the camping area, and the surrounding desert landscape.
El Puertito is about as remote as Baja gets, with no cell service, no gas station, and very few amenities. But that’s also what makes it special. There’s beautiful clear water, fishing, hiking, snorkeling, boondocking, and an incredible sense of peace.
I visited in March 2025 and in my website, share what the road was like, what it’s actually like getting down to the coast, and what you should know if you're considering making the trip yourself.

We’re back in El Álamo — but this time, we explored the other 1800s Gold Mine Mill, the one hidden deeper in the wash and in far rougher condition. This ...second mill has mostly collapsed, leaving only fragments of its original structure and scattered machinery.
Around the site, we also stumbled upon some unexpected surprises: • a curious house with a massive swimming pool (abandoned…? hard to tell) • and several huge concrete vats in the ground, likely relics from the old processing operations.
If you’ve been following my El Álamo adventures, this video shows a side of the ghost town most people never see.
El Álamo, a near-abandoned ghost town born from the 1800s Gold Rush, sits just nine miles off Highway 3 between Ensenada and San Felipe. The town sprang to life in 1888 after prospectors Rafael López and Juan Antonio Melendez discovered gold, igniting Baja California’s largest gold rush.
By 1889, over 1,600 people lived and worked in what was then called the Santa Clara fields. The community had its own newspaper (“The Alamo Nugget”), several productive mines including Princesa, Aurora, and Penelope, and even a 560-foot-deep mine shaft that still exists today.
As the decades passed, the population slowly faded — especially around World War II — but plenty of its mining history remains scattered across the desert.
A smooth graded road from Highway 3 at Km. 85.5 makes this hauntingly atmospheric ghost town an easy detour for anyone curious about Baja’s mining past.
