Puente La Leona – as it is called by the locals – is one of my favorite places for simple, unrestricted camping along the Sea of Cortez.
Located about 20 minutes south of Puertecitos, this isn’t an extremely remote destination — but once you leave Highway 5 and head down toward the pebble beach, it feels like you’ve left the developed world behind. There are no campground amenities here, no hookups, and no organized facilities. It’s true dispersed camping, and that’s exactly what I love about it.
The road down to the beach is in very bad shape, despite being so close to the highway. A 4×4 is strongly recommended, and without one you may have a very difficult time getting back out.
I’ve visited Puente La Leona multiple times, and each visit reminds me why I enjoy boondocking in Baja so much. You can set up camp, look out over the Sea of Cortez, and enjoy the freedom of having almost nothing around you.
Puertecitos is the better-known destination nearby, but established camping there isn’t the same experience. At Puente La Leona, camping is dispersed and free, which is much more in line with the kind of Baja camping I enjoy.
One of the things I hope these videos show is that you don’t always need an established campground to have a great and safe camping experience. Baja is full of opportunities to get away from developed campgrounds and find your own place to enjoy the peninsula.
If you’re interested in Sea of Cortez camping, Baja boondocking, dispersed camping in Baja California, or exploring the coastline south of Puertecitos, come along and see what Puente La Leona is like.
