If you own a 5th-generation Toyota 4Runner and regularly go camping, fishing, or take long road trips, eventually you run into the same problem: there is only so much room inside the 4Runner.
I’ve used a generic roof cargo basket on my 4Runner in the past, but after it started rusting badly, I decided it was time for an upgrade. I didn’t want to spend $1,000 or more on a premium overlanding roof rack, though. I was looking for something affordable, practical, and capable of handling the kind of gear I actually take on road trips.
That’s what led me to this 3/4-length roof rack cargo basket.
I’ve had it since November 2025 and have used it on at least 10 trips, including camping and road trips. I’ve carried everything from fishing rods and camping chairs to a camping table, firewood, and a spare gas can.
After using it for several months, here’s my honest assessment.
Looking for more gear I’ve actually tested? Visit my Outdoor Gear Reviews page, where I feature outdoor gear I’ve personally tested across California and Baja roads—no sponsorships and no affiliate links. Everything from footwear and backpacks to cooking gear and hydration systems has been used in real conditions, with a focus on lightweight, durable, and practical equipment for hiking, camping, and road trips.
Why I Chose a 3/4-Length Cargo Basket
The biggest reason I chose this particular style of rack was the combination of length, capacity, and price. My previous cargo basket was a generic model that worked reasonably well, but it eventually started rusting badly everywhere. I wanted something that felt like an upgrade without spending several hundred—or even more than a thousand—dollars.
This rack was available for under $300 on Amazon, which put it in a price range that made sense for me. The 3/4-length design was also important. I like having a substantial amount of usable cargo space on the roof without having a rack that extends unnecessarily far toward the front of the vehicle. For a camping and road-trip vehicle like my 5th-gen 4Runner, the additional space is extremely useful.
Installation
Installation was straightforward, although I definitely recommend having two people do it. The main reason isn’t that the installation itself is complicated. It’s that the rack is fairly heavy and awkward to position on top of a 4Runner. With two people, getting it into position and securing it was easy. Once it was installed and properly tightened, I haven’t had any problems with it coming loose or shifting.
Fit on the 5th Gen 4Runner
The fit on my 5th-generation 4Runner has been excellent. The rack sits properly on the roof and provides a substantial amount of additional cargo space without looking ridiculously oversized on the vehicle. One of my favorite things about the design is its relatively low profile. It doesn’t look like you’ve installed an enormous industrial cargo platform on top of the 4Runner. It also leaves plenty of useful space for the things I actually need to carry.
What I’ve Carried in It
This is where the rack has really proven its usefulness. Over the past several months I’ve used it to carry:
- Fishing rods
- A spare gas tank
- Camping tables
- Camping chairs
- Firewood
- Other bulky camping equipment
These are exactly the kinds of items that can take up a ridiculous amount of space inside a 4Runner. Moving them onto the roof frees up the interior for things that I’d rather keep protected from the weather and easier to access. For longer road trips, that additional storage space makes a noticeable difference.
How Does It Perform on Road Trips and Dirt Roads?
So far, I’ve had no issues. I’ve used the rack on highways as well as dirt roads and rougher roads while traveling. The rack has remained stable, and I’ve never had a problem with the cargo shifting or rattling when everything is properly secured. That’s particularly important to me because my 4Runner isn’t just a highway vehicle. A lot of my trips involve getting off the pavement and exploring dirt roads, camping areas, and more remote destinations. The rack has handled that use without any problems.
Wind Noise
This was one of the things I was particularly interested in after installing it. Fortunately, I haven’t noticed any significant wind noise from the rack. That’s a bigger deal than it might sound. A roof basket can potentially add quite a bit of wind noise, especially at highway speeds. Since I use the 4Runner for long road trips, I didn’t want something that would make the vehicle noticeably louder every time I got on the highway. So far, that hasn’t been an issue.
Does It Affect Fuel Economy?
Obviously, putting a large cargo basket on the roof isn’t going to improve fuel economy. But in my experience, the difference hasn’t been particularly noticeable. For me, the additional cargo capacity is well worth whatever small fuel economy penalty there might occasionally be.
Build Quality: The Honest Part
This is where I think it’s important to set realistic expectations. This is not a high-end premium roof rack. The construction is reasonably good for a rack in this price range and size, but you’re not getting the same level of materials and finish that you’d expect from a much more expensive overlanding rack. After having it since November 2025 and using it on at least 10 trips, I’ve started to see a little bit of rust developing in some spots. That’s disappointing, but it hasn’t affected the rack’s functionality. And compared with the generic cargo basket I had before, which was rusting all over the place, I’d still consider this an improvement.
If you’re looking for a premium rack that you expect to keep for many years with virtually no corrosion or finish issues, I’d spend more money.
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly cargo basket that gives you a lot of usable storage space, I think it’s a much easier recommendation.
The Low-Profile Design Is One of My Favorite Features
One of the things I like most about this rack is the combination of its 3/4-length design and relatively low profile. You get a lot of additional cargo space without putting an enormous structure on top of the 4Runner. For camping and road trips, that’s exactly what I wanted.
Being able to throw bulky things like camping chairs, tables, fishing equipment, and firewood up there can make the difference between a comfortably packed 4Runner and one where everything inside is crammed together.
Pros
- Excellent fit on the 5th-gen Toyota 4Runner
- Large amount of usable cargo space
- Low-profile design
- 3/4-length configuration works well on the 4Runner
- Easy installation with two people
- No noticeable wind noise
- Stable on highways and dirt roads
- Great for camping and road trips
- Significantly increases available cargo capacity
- Affordable compared with premium roof-rack systems
Cons
- Heavy, so installation is easier with two people
- Build quality isn’t premium
- Some rust has started appearing after several months of use
- Not the right choice if you’re looking for a high-end overlanding rack
Would I Buy It Again?
Yes—with one clarification. If I were looking for a budget-friendly roof cargo basket for my 5th-gen 4Runner, I would buy it again.
I’ve had it since November 2025, used it on at least 10 trips, and put it through normal road-trip, camping, and dirt-road use. It has done exactly what I needed it to do.
The rack isn’t perfect, and the small amount of rust that has appeared is something to keep in mind. But considering the price and the amount of additional cargo space it provides, I’m satisfied with it.
If you’re looking for a premium roof rack and are willing to spend significantly more, there are clearly much better options. But if your priority is getting a lot of additional cargo capacity for your 5th-gen 4Runner without spending a fortune, this 3/4-length cargo basket has been a good solution for me.
Final Verdict
For my use, I’d give this rack 4 out of 5 stars.
It’s not a premium product, and I wouldn’t pretend that it is. But it is a practical, affordable upgrade that has handled my camping and road trips well.
The low-profile 3/4-length design, excellent fit on the 5th-gen 4Runner, lack of noticeable wind noise, and large amount of usable storage space are the reasons I’d recommend it.
The main thing keeping it from a higher rating is the build quality and the rust that has begun to appear. But, if you’re shopping for an affordable 5th-gen 4Runner roof cargo basket, I’d consider it a solid budget option.

At one point in the video I mention something simple: we all complain about trash ...in our favorite parks and trails — but it can be as easy as grabbing a bag and doing our part. I brought one with me and just started picking things up.
This short video shows the creek, wildlife, and calm scenery of the Sepulveda Basin in the San Fernando Valley, with a simple idea at the center: we can all help. Small actions add up, and leaving a place better than we found it matters.

Agua Verde, Baja California Sur is a remote and one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever explored in Baja. In this video, I take you on a complete adventure to El Puertito, the remote beach and camping area across the small bay from the fishing community of Agua Verde.
The journey involves a long dirt-road drive through the Sierra de la Giganta before descending toward the Sea of Cortez. Along the way, we see the spectacular coastline, the camping area, and the surrounding desert landscape.
El Puertito is about as remote as Baja gets, with no cell service, no gas station, and very few amenities. But that’s also what makes it special. There’s beautiful clear water, fishing, hiking, snorkeling, boondocking, and an incredible sense of peace.
I visited in March 2025 and in my website, share what the road was like, what it’s actually like getting down to the coast, and what you should know if you're considering making the trip yourself.

Then, we move on to La Poza Grande, a once thriving town that was destroyed literally overnight when hirricane John caused its river to unusually rise and flood the town. The ghostly remains are a true beacon for urbex enthusiasts!
Finally, we visit the La Paz Malecón, where stunning sculptures line the waterfront, even on a cold, rainy morning.
