ToggleThere is something about traveling through Baja California that keeps me coming back!
It’s not just the beaches, the desert, the coast, or the small towns scattered along the peninsula. It’s the possibility that the most interesting place of the day might be somewhere you never planned to visit.
A dirt road catches your attention. A road sign makes you curious. You see something interesting in the distance and decide to stop.
Sometimes it leads nowhere … And sometimes it leads to a place you’ll remember for years. That’s what I love about exploring Baja.
In this video, I’ve put together some of my favorite Baja California adventures and discoveries from my month-long 2025 roadtrip —from scenic coastal drives and remote beaches to camping, fishing, ghost towns, historic places, and the unexpected stops that make a road trip memorable.
Why I Keep Exploring Baja California
One of the great things about Baja is that you don’t always have to follow an strict itinerary. Some of the best experiences I’ve had started with something as simple as seeing an unfamiliar road and wondering where it went. Baja rewards that kind of curiosity.
The main highways will get you where you’re going, but sometimes the most memorable experiences happen when you take a different route, stop somewhere that catches your eye, or spend a little extra time exploring a place that wasn’t on the original plan.
That’s one of the reasons I enjoy road trips here so much. You never really know what you’re going to find.
Baja California Road Trips Are About More Than the Destination
It’s easy to think about a Baja roadtrip as a list of typical “touristy” destinations: Ensenada, San Quintín, Guerrero Negro, Bahía de los Ángeles, Mulegé, Loreto, La Paz, or Cabo San Lucas.
And don’t get me wrong, all of these places are worth visiting, but some of my favorite memories aren’t necessarily at a famous destination. They’re the moments in between. A rough dirt road leading toward a remote coast. A completely unexpected viewpoint. A small fishing community. A roadside stop that wasn’t in any map.
Those experiences are part of what makes driving through Baja so rewarding.
Fishing in Baja California
Fishing is another reason I love Baja. There are countless opportunities to fish from shore, and you don’t necessarily need a boat or an expensive setup or even much experience, to enjoy it. One of the things I love most is finding out what local anglers are catching and learning which areas are productive during different times of the year. Sometimes the fishing is excellent. Sometimes it isn’t. But that’s part of the adventure. You never really know what the day is going to bring. And fishing often gives me another reason to stop and explore a place that I might otherwise have driven right past.
Camping and Getting Off the Main Road
For me, camping is closely connected to exploring. There is something different about spending the night somewhere you’ve reached by a rough road rather than simply checking into a hotel at the end of the day.
Baja has plenty of opportunities for this, from established campgrounds to great boondocking spots in remote coastal areas. Of course, remote travel requires more preparation. Road conditions can change, weather can affect access, and some areas are much more suitable for high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles than others. That’s part of the reason I like documenting these trips. I want to show what these places are actually like—not just what they look like in a beautiful photograph.
The Unexpected Stops Are Often the Best Ones
If there is one lesson I’ve learned from traveling through Baja, it’s this: Don’t be afraid to stop.
If something catches your attention, investigate it. If you see a road you’ve never taken, and it’s safe and practical to do so, maybe follow it. If a local tells you about a place you’ve never heard of, remember it.
Some of the best discoveries I’ve made started exactly that way. They weren’t on my itinerary. They weren’t necessarily recommended by a travel guide. I simply became curious. And that’s often enough to turn an ordinary drive into an adventure.
More Baja Adventures Are Coming
This compilation brings together some of my favorite moments from a previous trip, but I’m already looking forward to getting back out on the road and exploring more of Baja California. There are still plenty of roads I haven’t driven, places I haven’t explored, fishing spots I haven’t tried, and questions I haven’t answered.
And that’s exactly why Baja keeps me coming back!
If you’re planning your own Baja road trip, I hope these adventures give you a few ideas—and maybe encourage you to leave a little room in your itinerary for something unexpected.
Because sometimes the best part of the trip is the place you never intended to visit.
I Found One of the Most Beautiful Places in Baja — Agua Verde
https://www.milesandhikes.com/agua-verde-in-baja-california-sur/
Agua Verde, Baja California Sur is a remote and one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever explored in Baja. In this video, I take you on a complete adventure to El Puertito, the remote beach and camping area across the small bay from the fishing community of Agua Verde.
The journey involves a long dirt-road drive through the Sierra de la Giganta before descending toward the Sea of Cortez. Along the way, we see the spectacular coastline, the camping area, and the surrounding desert landscape.
El Puertito is about as remote as Baja gets, with no cell service, no gas station, and very few amenities. But that’s also what makes it special. There’s beautiful clear water, fishing, hiking, snorkeling, boondocking, and an incredible sense of peace.
I visited in March 2025 and in my website, share what the road was like, what it’s actually like getting down to the coast, and what you should know if you're considering making the trip yourself.

Ejido Eréndira is one of those places that instantly ...slows you down.
In this short video we spend the day fishing, landing some great fish, and exploring the incredible rock pools carved into the coastline.
If you love Baja, coastal fishing, and quiet off-the-beaten-path places, this one’s for you.

We’re back in El Álamo — but this time, we explored the other 1800s Gold Mine Mill, the one hidden deeper in the wash and in far rougher condition. This second mill has mostly collapsed, leaving only fragments of its original structure and scattered machinery.
Around the site, we also stumbled upon some unexpected surprises:
• a curious house with a massive swimming pool (abandoned…? hard to tell)
• and several huge concrete vats in the ground, likely relics from the old processing operations.
If you’ve been following my El Álamo adventures, this video shows a side of the ghost town most people never see.
El Álamo, a near-abandoned ghost town born from the 1800s Gold Rush, sits just nine miles off Highway 3 between Ensenada and San Felipe. The town sprang to life in 1888 after prospectors Rafael López and Juan Antonio Melendez discovered gold, igniting Baja California’s largest gold rush.
By 1889, over 1,600 people lived and worked in what was then called the Santa Clara fields. The community had its own newspaper (“The Alamo Nugget”), several productive mines including Princesa, Aurora, and Penelope, and even a 560-foot-deep mine shaft that still exists today.
As the decades passed, the population slowly faded — especially around World War II — but plenty of its mining history remains scattered across the desert.
A smooth graded road from Highway 3 at Km. 85.5 makes this hauntingly atmospheric ghost town an easy detour for anyone curious about Baja’s mining past.

This isn’t your typical beach day — it’s the rugged, wild Baja experience Miles and Hikes is all about.
Where is Ejido Eréndira?
Just 90 minutes from Ensenada, this hidden gem is where paved roads end and true Baja adventure begins. Nestled between desert trails and dramatic Pacific cliffs, Ejido Eréndira offers unspoiled nature, local culture, and jaw-dropping scenery off the beaten path.
Fossils Along the Pacific Cliffs
Discover ancient marine fossils embedded in the cliffs — shells, clams, and spiraled sea creatures perfectly preserved in stone. Walk alongside history while the ocean crashes just feet away. A dream spot for nature lovers, photographers, and history buffs.
Natural Ocean Geysers: Baja’s Best Kept Secret
Beyond the famous La Bufadora, smaller ocean blowholes shoot water sky-high along this coast. We caught these geysers erupting at sunset — a breathtaking, raw natural spectacle filled with salty spray and thunderous roars.
Wildlife Encounters in the Wild
Baja’s wild heart revealed itself with a sunbathing rattlesnake on the roadside and a solitary coyote silhouetted against the sunset ridge. No fences, no filters — just nature in its purest form.
Fresh Mussels From the Shore
At low tide, the rocks are teeming with fresh mussels — a local delicacy we gathered and enjoyed in a seaside feast. For seafood lovers, this is Baja paradise.
Why You Should Visit Ejido Eréndira
This rugged, off-the-grid destination offers fossils, geysers, fresh seafood, and wild encounters without the crowds or commercialization. Add it to your Baja bucket list for an authentic adventure.
