I never really liked the look of the factory wheels on my 4Runner, but I also wasn’t interested in spending a fortune replacing them with a set of black aftermarket wheels. So, when I came across these WheelX hubcap wheel covers for about $108 for a set of four, I figured they were worth a shot.
A year later, I’m still running them. And honestly, I’m impressed with how well they’ve held up.
Why I Bought Them
The main reason was simple: I wanted to change the look of my 4Runner without spending hundreds—or potentially thousands—on a new set of wheels.
At roughly $25 per wheel, these seemed like a pretty low-risk way to see if I liked the look. They also install over the factory wheels, so there was no need to replace anything or make any permanent changes.
Installation
These are snap-on covers, and that is both a good thing and, initially, a little bit of a challenge. They snap into place extremely tightly. Getting them installed took some effort because you really have to make sure they’re seated properly, but also need to use quite some force to get them in!
Once they’re on though, they are on very securely.
I’ve had them installed for about a year now, and I’ve driven with them at highway speeds, taken the 4Runner off-road on some pretty horrible tracks, and generally put them through the kind of use you’d expect from a vehicle that actually gets out and explores.
I’ve never had one come loose or fall off, or even rattle.
How They’ve Held Up
This is probably the biggest surprise for me. I expected them to look good, but I wasn’t sure how durable they would actually be. After a year of use, I’m impressed.
They’re made from ABS plastic, but they don’t look or feel like the cheap plastic hubcaps you might associate with older cars. Once they’re installed, they look surprisingly legitimate. From a normal viewing distance, they honestly look much more like an actual black wheel than a cover sitting over the factory wheel.
And after a year of driving, including plenty of highway miles and rough off-road use, they’re still securely attached and looking great.
The Look
For me, this is where these really make sense. I didn’t want the factory-wheel look, but I also didn’t want to spend a ton of money on aftermarket wheels just to get a black finish. These completely changed the appearance of the 4Runner for a fraction of the cost. They’re glossy black and give the truck a much more aggressive look. More importantly, they don’t scream “cheap hubcap.” That’s probably the biggest compliment I can give them.
Would I Buy Them Again?
Absolutely. I’ve had them on the 4Runner for a year now, and I haven’t had a single issue with them. They stay securely in place, they’ve held up to highway driving and rough off-road conditions, and they completely changed the look of the factory wheels.
For around $108 for all four, I think they’re a great option for someone who doesn’t like the look of their stock 4Runner wheels but doesn’t want to spend the money on a completely new set of wheels.
I’d buy them again without hesitation.
