We returned to El Alamo, an abandoned gold rush town from the ...1800s in Baja California. Last time, we explored the old mill and mine (watch the full playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Weql2v7nLsU&list=PLGBfZJB3fcq9OsHQT2ZkrLeje6NKEti9x), but this trip had a new mission: mineral hunting.
While we found some interesting minerals, the day took an unexpected turn.
Out in the desert, we stumbled upon off-road racers practicing for the world-famous Baja 500—dust flying, engines roaring, and adrenaline pumping. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, we discovered a mysteriously well-maintained paved road leading to the indigenous Pai Pai community of Santa Catarina.
This remote town feels like stepping into history, complete with an abandoned church that was both fascinating and eerie to explore.

Mineral hunting near El Alamo
Baja 500 off-road practice run
Following a secret paved road to an unexpected destination
Discovering the ancestral Pai Pai community of Santa Catarina

Craving a raw, untamed coastline full of ancient wonders and fresh seafood? ...Join us as we explore Ejido Eréndira, a remote fishing village just south of Ensenada, Baja California. On this epic adventure, we hiked along fossil-covered cliffs, got drenched by powerful ocean geysers, harvested fresh mussels right off the rocks, and had close encounters with Baja’s wild rattlesnakes and coyotes.
This isn’t your typical beach day — it’s the rugged, wild Baja experience Miles and Hikes is all about.
Where is Ejido Eréndira?
Just 90 minutes from Ensenada, this hidden gem is where paved roads end and true Baja adventure begins. Nestled between desert trails and dramatic Pacific cliffs, Ejido Eréndira offers unspoiled nature, local culture, and jaw-dropping scenery off the beaten path.
Fossils Along the Pacific Cliffs
Discover ancient marine fossils embedded in the cliffs — shells, clams, and spiraled sea creatures perfectly preserved in stone. Walk alongside history while the ocean crashes just feet away. A dream spot for nature lovers, photographers, and history buffs.
Natural Ocean Geysers: Baja’s Best Kept Secret
Beyond the famous La Bufadora, smaller ocean blowholes shoot water sky-high along this coast. We caught these geysers erupting at sunset — a breathtaking, raw natural spectacle filled with salty spray and thunderous roars.
Wildlife Encounters in the Wild
Baja’s wild heart revealed itself with a sunbathing rattlesnake on the roadside and a solitary coyote silhouetted against the sunset ridge. No fences, no filters — just nature in its purest form.
Fresh Mussels From the Shore
At low tide, the rocks are teeming with fresh mussels — a local delicacy we gathered and enjoyed in a seaside feast. For seafood lovers, this is Baja paradise.
Why You Should Visit Ejido Eréndira
This rugged, off-the-grid destination offers fossils, geysers, fresh seafood, and wild encounters without the crowds or commercialization. Add it to your Baja bucket list for an authentic adventure.

From well-preserved churches to ancient ruins, each mission tells a story of faith, resilience, and the rich heritage of the Baja Peninsula.
The Spanish missions of Baja California were established by Jesuit, Franciscan, and Dominican missionaries from the late 17th to early 19th centuries. Their goal was to convert and educate the native populations while also expanding Spain's influence in the New World. These missions not only introduced Christianity but also brought agriculture, architecture, and new technologies to the region. Today, they stand as powerful reminders of Baja's colonial past, blending Spanish and indigenous cultures.
In this video, we discover the fascinating legacy of these historic sites:
- Misión San José de Comondú: Nestled in a peaceful oasis, with charming stone architecture.
- Misión de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de La Paz Airapí: The first mission of La Paz.
- Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó: The birthplace of California's mission system.
- Misión San Juan Bautista (Ruins): The hauntingly beautiful remains of this historic mission.
- Misión Santa Rosalía de Mulegé: Overlooking a lush river oasis with stunning views.
- Misión San Francisco Borja: A remote desert mission frozen in time.
- Misión San Fernando de Velicatá (Ruins): The last mission founded by the legendary Junípero Serra.
- Misión San Francisco Javier de Viggé-Biaundó: an 18th-century mission known for its stunning baroque architecture.
- Misión San Ignacio Kadakaamán: A beautifully preserved mission surrounded by date palms.
Whether you're a history buff, an adventure traveler, or just curious about Baja's cultural treasures, this road trip will inspire you to explore beyond the beaches.

Once a thriving mining camp with settlers from across the region and the U.S., it gradually faded as gold deposits ran out, leaving behind remnants of adobe homes, underground dwellings, and a historic cemetery.
